Jubilee Golf Classic a Roaring Success

Ballyholland Harps continued their golden jubilee celebrations on Friday 30th July with a hugely successful golf classic, held at Warrenpoint Golf Club.

The day couldn’t have got off to a better start, when we all woke up to see the sun slipping in behind the curtains. It was no exaggeration to say it was the best day of the year and as a result, camp was set up on the veranda so as to bask in the heat.

Play got underway as early as a quarter past eight and during the course of the day, over forty teams took to the fairways.

The weather made for some fine scoring and for a long time it looked like the very first four-ball of the day, Ballyholland footballers Ronan Murphy, Ciaran Hartigan, Colman Smith and Shane Mulholland, were going to lift the honours with a total of 99 points.

Quite a few teams ran them close as the afternoon wore on, but eventually the third last four-ball of the day, a team led by Brian McManus, finally topped their score with an impressive total of 102 points.

Justin Byrne’s team were very much in the shake-up also and their total of 98 points got among the prizes, in third place.

Many of the participants spent the afternoon enjoying the weather on the balcony watching their rival teams come in, before heading back to Ballyholland Harps Social Club for a prize-giving barbecue in the evening time. Local musicman Kevin Kearney then entertained all until the wee hours to wrap up a very successful day.

Many thanks are owed to Warrenpoint Gold Club and their staff for use of their facilities, plus for a fantastic meal afterwards, while Pat Cullen and Co. laid on a tremendous spread on the return for the home leg.

Thanks are also owed to the many sponsors who made the day possible.

All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable day out and the organising committee, led by Joe Murphy, deserve huge credit for their efforts.

This was the first event of its kind ever held by Ballyholland Harps and it went off without even the merest of hitches – indeed the best praise I can give the committee is that there was a unanimous feeling among the participants that this should now become an annual event.

NMDC Grant Award

The Committee has at last received confirmation that Newry & Mourne District Council is granting the BDA an award of £10,000 towards the completion of a full Economic Appraisal and Business Plan of the proposed Community Resource project.

With the assistance of Mentor Consultants, this should be completed within the next few months and then the next task will be to secure the major captial funding necessary to deliver the scheme.

The Committee wish to thank the NMDC and the Crotlieve Councillors for their continued support given to the Committee and to the development itself.

Without doubt it was a great night and as well as raising much needed funds to go towards the development of the Community Resource Centre, it helped bring together large sections of the Ballyholland community.
>
Look out for Stars Night #2 - maybe Paul Mac's voice might have come back by then!
