James Patterson makes the under-21s

Congratulations to James 'Beeney' Patterson on getting a call-up to the Down under-21 squad.

The big midfielder obviouslty carried his impressive end of season form into the trials and let's hope he can nail down a starting spot for the Championship in March.

AGM and the New Committee

There was a healthy turnout for this year's AGM, especially considering it went head to head with the Mayobridge vs Crossmaglen Ulster Final.

Last year's committee was more or less re-elected en bloc, with the only new face being Michael Kearney, while Cyril O'Reilly has stepped up to assume the position of Vice-Chairman.

Committee for 2005:

Chairman: Sean McAteer
Vice-Chairman: Cyril O'Reilly
Secretary: Paddy Savage
Treasurer: Michael John Keenan
Members: Damien Dixon, Brendan O'Hare, Michael Kearney, Patsy Kearney, Anthony McNamee, John Keenan.

The committee has the option to co-opt a further number of committee members.

Paul Murphy in the news

Midfielder Paul Murphy featured heavily in stories about the new Down panel in both the Irish News and Ceefax yesterday.

Although we've known at the club for some time about his call-up to the county, the press were only informed on Wednesday about Paddy O'Rourke's plans for the National League.

Both articles suggested that Down are on the look out for new midfielders and that Murph might be the man to fill Gregory McCartan's jersey in the upcoming games.

The play-off equation

Confirmation reached the club last night that should teams be tied on points at the end of the play-off series, then the promotion places (and league title) would be decided by the teams with the best aggregate scoring difference.

This decision has effectively taken Annaclone out of the equation. Mathematically they still have a chance, but it's slimmer than a slim thing.

The good news though is that should Ballyholland put in even a semblance of a performance next week against the Shamrocks, then there will be first division football played at Fr Lynch Park in 2005 (and I'm not talking about Mayobridge meeting Burren either).

But, seeing as Atticall have already convincingly beaten Annaclone this season and also as the Shamrocks simply demolished the Harps back in June, then it probably is a little too early to be counting chickens just yet.

As things presently stand:

 PlayedPointsPts ForPts AgainstDifference
Ballyholland243621+15
Shamrocks222417+7
Atticall221927-8
Annaclone201933-14

Which leaves the following scenarios:

  • Should Ballyholland win or draw next week against Shamrocks, they would be promoted as Champions.

  • Should Ballyholland lose by less than 4 points, they would still be guaranteed promotion. In this case, Atticall would need to trump Annaclone by at least 20 points to take the title from the Harps (or win by some 18 points to oust Shamrocks from the second promotion spot).

  • Should Shamrocks beat Ballyholland by exactly 4 points, both these sides would finish exactly level. If this was the case, then Atticall would be required to win by 15 points to join level (forcing a three-way play-off presumably), or 16 points to leapfrog the Newry pair and go up as Champions.

  • Should the Shamrocks win by 4 points are greater, they would be guaranteed promotion.

  • Atticall need to recover either 16 points from the Shamrocks or 24 points from Ballyholland to guarantee promotion e.g. if Ballyholland won by 7 points and Atticall won by 9 points, then Atticall would go up in second place.
  • For Annaclone to ignite their slim promotion hopes, they need Ballyholland to beat Shamrocks, whilst somehow recovering 21 points in the process e.g. a Ballyholland win by 4 points and an Annaclone victory by 17 points would see them promoted.

Deal done for Penguin suits.

Anybody wanting to hire a tuxedo for the big do on the 29th should note that Patsy Kearney has negotiated a deal with Debenhams in the Quays for the club. Suit hire is normally £30 but we hope to get a substantial reduction if we can get as many boys as possible to sign up.....The more suits we hire the cheaper it will be!!!
