Successful poker evening

Friday night past, in the hall, saw 39 competitors take their places for a very successful Texas Hold 'Em fundraiser in aid of Carraig an Aifreann Celtic Supporters Club.

There was a healthy Ballyholland representation at the final table, as Shane Mulholland, Kevin Loughran and Ciaran Hartigan all took minor placings, while Anthony McNamee and Ronan Murphy finished 3rd and 2nd respectively.

Top prize though went to a Roscommon man called Fergus, so congratulations to him.

Well done also to Barry O'Connor for running the event.

Seniors enjoy a winning start to season

Ballyholland's senior footballers enjoyed a comfortable 4.12 to 0.04 victory over St Paul's of Belfast in their first pre-season friendly today.

Action Shot
Good to see Hoss back in action
Although it should be stressed that the St Paul's XV they faced was quite a bit closer to their reserve side than their senior side, it should also be noted that it was a confident performance from the Harps, and one that at times was quite clinical.

The Ballyholland starting line-up sported a couple of interesting selections, with Joe Murphy and Paudie McKernan each finding themselves in the full-back line for (probably) the first time in their careers. And in fairness, both lads acquitted themselves quite well, and young Murphy made a couple of notable interceptions early doors.

After a tentative enough start, during which Kieran Murphy was called upon to save a penalty and St Paul's were guilty of kicking a number of decent opportunities into the Ballyholland netminder's hands, Harps gradually took control, owing in no small portion to Aidy McAteer and Paddy McAnulty taking a firm grip of the key central positions.

Further up the field, Mark O'Hare was in an eye-catching mood, one which would lead him to a fine personal tally of 2.02. His second goal was an angled Sho special from 20 metres.

But if anything, the later goals were better efforts.

The first of those came after a flowing move through seven or eight pairs of hands culminated in the impressive Gavin McAteer driving home, while later on Mattie Shields pulled the cheekiest of chips out of the bag when faced with a one on one with the keeper.

In between all that, Hugh McGettigan rolled out the changes, in the process allowing 24 players in total to see some meaningful game time. And it's a full credit to the lads who were introduced that the overall performance level never really dropped.

It wasn't all perfect, most noticeably in a general lack of sharpness in handpassing and also in a seeming reluctance to deliver the ball early, and it's worth remembering again that it wasn't a strong St Paul's team - but by and large it was a rather encouraging way to start the season.

Good grub from St Paul's too.

Ballyholland: K Murphy; C Barry, P McKernan, J Murphy; D Campbell, P McAnulty, D McCrink; J Patterson (0-1), C Murtagh; J Barry (0-2), A McAteer (0-1), G McAteer (1-0); M O'Hare (2-2), C Sands (0-3, 2f), T Havern (0-1). Subs used: R Matthews, K Dunne, S Fitzpatrick, S McClelland, B O'Hare, P Murphy, C McAteer (0-1), M Shields (1-0), C Hartigan (0-1).
